Background of the study
Market women in Ekwusigo face a multitude of stressors ranging from economic pressures to environmental challenges, which may contribute to physiological outcomes such as hair loss. Chronic stress has been linked to hormonal imbalances that affect the hair growth cycle, potentially leading to conditions like telogen effluvium and androgenic alopecia (Chukwu, 2023). Additionally, the psychosocial impact of stress—including anxiety and depression—may exacerbate hair loss through both direct physiological pathways and indirect behaviors such as poor nutritional intake (Nnadi, 2024). Market environments, characterized by long working hours, inadequate rest, and exposure to pollutants, further compound these stressors. Emerging research suggests that the interplay between stress hormones and hair follicle function is complex and multifactorial (Okoro, 2025). This study aims to examine how the chronic stress experienced by market women in Ekwusigo influences hair loss by incorporating psychological assessments and clinical observations. The goal is to develop targeted interventions that address both stress management and hair loss prevention in this vulnerable population.
Statement of the problem
Market women in Ekwusigo Local Government Area experience high levels of stress, yet there is limited research linking this stress to hair loss. The absence of comprehensive studies on the physiological and psychological effects of stress on hair health hampers effective intervention. This study seeks to address the gap by examining the correlation between chronic stress and hair loss among market women. The lack of targeted health strategies for managing stress-induced hair loss remains a significant public health concern, necessitating an investigation into the underlying mechanisms and potential preventive measures (Chukwu, 2023).

Significance of the study:
This study will illuminate the link between chronic stress and hair loss among market women, guiding health practitioners in developing stress management and hair loss prevention programs tailored to the needs of this group (Chukwu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing the effect of stress on hair loss among market women in Ekwusigo Local Government Area. It does not encompass other demographic groups or additional causes of hair loss.
